The coffee cooperative Regional de Agricultores Orgánicos de la Sierra (RAOS), in La Paz, Honduras, was founded in 1997 and became Fair Trade certified by Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) in 1999.
Since its inception, RAOS’ goals have been to improve the standard of living of its members, to protect and conserve the environment, and to market members’ coffee on the international market.
RAOS believes in equal opportunity; the cooperative boasts a female membership of more than 55%. RAOS made its first sale to the US market in 2004.
The Fair Trade price has enabled Cooperativa Regional Mixta de Agricultores Orgánicos de la S to establish various social and productive programs Productive Investment. The cooperative purchased and operates an ecological wet mill and built drying patios for its members. Environment. RAOS conducts a training program in organic agriculture and participates in Intercambios —on-site educational exchanges— with other organizations. RAOS members only use natural fertilizers and practice soil conservation.
Health:The cooperative has educated female co-op members about reproductive health issues.
Womens Programs:Members voted to establish COMICAP, a women’s development organization. Through this organization, several social programs have been created, including an initiative addressing domestic violence and the abuse of women.
